Stock Market Update for Tuesday, July 24th, 2018

Stocks began the day strong with nice gains and a rally in the morning. But a pullback late morning and choppy afternoon resulted in the indices giving back some earlier profits.

It was the DOW leading the way today with a 0.8% gain. The S&P was second in line with a0.5% gain. However, the NASDAQ struggled and finished the day flat, which was a surprise since the NASDAQ was up 1.1% and made a new record high before falling.

Here’s where the major indices ended the day:

  • The S&P finished with a 0.5% gain. Up 13 points, the S&P ended at 2,820.
  • The DOW ended 0.8% higher. Adding 198 points, the DOW closed at 25,242.
  • The NASDAQ was flat. Dropping a point, the NASDAQ finished at 7,841.
  • Bitcoin ended 6.6% higher. Adding $510, Bitcoin is trading at $8,260.

Crude Oil (CL) was on the move again today and this time finished higher. Up 0.9%, CL finished at $68.49 a barrel.

Alphabet (GOOG) had a great day after reporting better than expected earnings. GOOG finished with a 3.5% gain with a new record high.

Harley Davidson (HOG) was up nicely after an earnings beat. Harley was up 7.7% although the company had to lower future earnings expectations because of tariffs.

With a 1.8% gain, Facebook (FB) made new record highs. Facebook reports earnings tomorrow.
