Stocks ended the day mixed. And it definitely looked like traders were trying to figure out what’s next.
The S&P flirted with its 50-day moving average for the 3rd day in a row, closing above this key level, but struggling to really pull away in either direction.
The focus today was on earnings and trade.
Earnings were pretty good. But Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross put a damper on the mood after saying that the U.S. and China are still “miles and miles” apart from reaching a deal.
Stocks were slightly higher at the open, then traded sideways.
There was a rally late morning, then a quick pullback. The rest of the day was pretty choppy with a drop to session lows in the afternoon.
By the end of the day the S&P and NASDAQ were higher. But the DOW finished the day with a loss.
